Vomitory: Blood rapture
11/09/06 || Lord K Philipson
This is not a new album by any means, but seeing that it’s not already on this site covered in all its glory is a huge fuck-up on our part. We ask for forgiveness and bow before our stupidity. We repent, get down on our knees, ass up, and will accept brutal ass-penetration for this mischief.
Now when we have dealt with sore asses, let’s dive into the extravaganza that is “Blood rapture”.
As some of you know, I have had the privilege to help these guys out on a couple of small tours or three. I know Vomitory like the top of my cock and I understand how they compose and more importantly: why they do it like they do it. They breathe death metal. They shit death metal. They are fucken death metal with every bone in their decomposing bodies, and without hesitating I’d say that Vomitory is one of the finest death bands we have in this world. Sadly underrated and sadly waiting for a well-deserved breakthrough though. There is no fucken god, and if there is, he/she/it has no knowledge whatso-fucken-ever about which bands deserve to be the reigning kings of the scene.
Vomitory turned out to be one of my absolute fave-bands during my short stint with them (actually a little before that, but hey… fuck you). I wasn’t quite into them in the past (before this album to be precise), but I always acknowledged the fact that these guys knew what they were doing. I just didn’t understand how insanely fucken excellent it was until these last few years.
What “Blood rapture” offers? Well, here we have death metal anthems like “Chaos fury” (complete with its “War ensemble” tribute-theft in the intro), “Blessed and forsaken” (one of the finest tunes ever by these guys), the title track itself and let’s see… yes, 6 more death metal hits. Line them all up, crank them and stand in awe. “Blood rapture” is so full of relentless fucken groovy brutality it’s not easy to make it justice with words. These guys mean what they are writing and performing, and it so fucken shows. There are clever arrangements (sure, standard intro/verse/bridge/verse/chorus alot of the time, but hey, that worked for The Beatles and it sure works for Vomitory. Sometimes less is fucken more) all over the place together with nifty little details and small twin harmonies on the axes when needed. You simply haven’t experienced how death metal is supposed to be done if you haven’t fucken experienced Vomitory.
Tobben is not only one of the coolest guys I have ever met, he’s also one of the very few drummers that actually knows how to groove. No click tracks, no bullshit, just groove and blasts. Playing with him in God Among Insects is an honour. Vocalist/bassist Erik is on top of his game and the fact that they once even considered looking for a new vocalist, so Erik could concentrate on bass only, was just… stupid. Erik fucken kills, and that’s that. Tobben’s brother Ubbe and second guitarist Ulf (nowadays replaced by shorts-wearing thrasher Peter) shreds them axes like there’s no tomorrow. We are not talking Yngwie Malmsteen wankery here, nope, we are talking full-fucken-on brutality and energy. No jacking off (except on my part), no flashiness, just death metal. Tight, raw, menacing death fucken metal.
Sure, there are bands out there who are faster, bands who are tighter and bands that are more extreme in all aspects. But what it all fucken comes down to is: are they better?
The answer to that, my friends, is a very simple: fuck no.
This review should have convinced you already. There’s no need for me to stretch it more than I already have. You see my point. Even fucken Stevie Wonder can see my point. If you do not understand the greatness that is this band you deserve to be sodomized by an army of Mr. T’s. And you all know that guy means business.
Just as I’m about to finish this review up, the power in my flat goes out for 5 seconds. Even the fucken weather fears the primal massacre that is Vomitory.
9/10.
